There is still an issue in Korea that most information is only available in Korean (though that is slowly changing). Of course, that is one of the reasons why I am keeping my Korean up as a rare quality to my name. Here are some websites listed:
Seoul Global Center - General information about living in Korea and conducting business there.
Gusts of Popular Feeling (Added to my list of blogs) – A very interesting site about modern Korean history.
Social Organizations
The Seoul Club was briefly mentioned as the top private club in Korea for Westerners. Anyone heard of or has been a part of it? I’ve never heard of these type of organizations before reading about it here.
Some others that were listed are the Seoul Rotary and the Seoul Foreign Correspondents’ Club.
Of course, church is also listed. Church is seen as a very good way to make business contacts so I would highly suggest going if you would like to meet people. I have known a lot of Koreans that make it a point to go to church every Sunday for the single reason to get business contacts.
Other
Some English periodicals are listed, I would suggest seeing my list on the Learning Korean page here.
Just like any other country, make sure to double- and triple-check any sort of numbers you get from any agency. You can check multiple sources and get different values since they might use different criteria to generate them.
If possible, get information from company insiders. They are likely to be more accurate than foreign businesspeople no matter how good their intentions are.
While the older generation is wise and has lots of experience, play it safe. Sometimes people become wrapped around in their ideas (this is very common in Korean pride). Don’t neglect what they say, but make sure to check back to the current younger generation to see if things are different today than they were yesterday.
Well, that ends Part I: Getting to Know the Koreans. Now on to Part II: Putting Your Best Foot Forward.
