North Korean weather report shows no division

While I was watching some DPRK TV (yeah … really exhilarating, I know.  I hope that’s not illegal here … if it is, I heard it from a friend ;) ) I noticed something interesting during the weather report.  When they were talking about weather they never shows a division between North and South Korea.  Here’s one pic:

On the same news broadcast I saw the news report showing video of the kids being given “gifts of love” from Kim Jong-Il (not in person).  They were flying around in a helicopter which doesn’t seem like the most efficient way to do it (though I guess it makes good press).

Another random observation, you know all those North Korean posters?  Well, each broadcast includes a few of those kinds of phrases (usually praising Kim Jong-Il).  Yeah, right in the middle of the news.

  1. The South Korean news reports don’t usually show a distinction between South and North either, at least for the big picture similar to the shot there above. Incidentally, how are you viewing NK TV in SK? Since all the NK related websites are blocked (kcna.co.jp, for instance), I would bet it probably is illegal. However, if you feel like informing my friends overseas how they may view NK news online, they would certainly appreciate an email to holterbarbour at hotmail.com.

    In the close up shots of NK they still didn’t show a line.

    The website where I got this wasn’t blocked. It’s actually linked to on the wikipedia page about the Korea Central Broadcasting lol. For the other sites that are blocked, you can always use ssh if you have a server account physically located in the states. ssh is always a safe route to go since it’s encrypted and no one can see what you access (they can just see that data is traveling to and from the other country)

  3. yes. it is illegal.
    but, who cares? ;;

  4. I came here to say what Andrew said, that South Korean news is often the same way. South Korean newscasts also show the weather for Dokdo as well, and zoom in to show what’s happening on Ulleung-do and Dok-do. The same attention isn’t paid to Jeju.

  5. @…..
    Haha, just what I thought (otherwise I wouldn’t have mentioned that it might be illegal)

    @Brian
    Lol, that’s awesome. I think I remember seeing that on the TV and thinking ‘why?’ I guess there’s a couple of people living over there though if I remember correctly (like guards or something).

    I actually haven’t seen South Korean weather news so I’ll be interested in seeing that. I had always assumed that both countries would show a border whenever the Korean peninsula was shown, but apparently not all assumptions are correct.

  6. Then this might surprise you even more. South Korea and North Korea’s teams entered Sydney 2000 Olympic games and Torino 2006 Olympic games’ opening and closing ceremonies together as “KOREA” with a unified Korea flag.

  7. uh, somehow the picture is not showing when you use the url above.
    Why is that, matt? it is because some php code is being executed to display the picture before it redirects the browser?

    Anyway, try this instead.

    I’m not sure, that’s really strange :S Very interesting! I guess relations got a little worse since I think they were separate in Beijing (correct me if I’m wrong). It looks like they were planning to do a joint team back in 2005 but the relationship went down hill after that

  9. Hey, I just moved into 성공하는 사람들 원룸 yesterday. I’ve walked by Prime House a few times already, it’s pretty close by. Let me know if you have some free time and want to meet a new neighbour, lol.

    Brom the good ol’ BC eh? I lived in Van for 2 years and absolutely LOVED it. Most beautiful place I’ve ever lived. Sure, that’d be cool, I always enjoy meeting my neighbors

  11. Wait, how do you know where i’m from? lol. Yeah, i’m from Victoria, BC. Did you ever visit there while living in Vancouver? It’s a nice place, just a short ferry ride away. The capital of BC, even. Do you have msn?

    Well, I saw you on a list that Sean had and I added you on Facebook lol. I do, but I actually don’t use it very much (I use NateOn more)
