KT Foreigner Friendly FAIL

I’ve tried using my foreigner registration and it’s worked on a couple of sites so that’s cool.  What’s uncool is that my i-pin doesn’t work on the sites that use i-pin rather than the foreign registration number.  A message comes up that says the server failed.  foreigner friendly FAIL.

Today I was looking at KT’s QOOK & SHOW website and thought there might be an easy way for me to see the services targeted towards foreigners.  I saw ‘ENGLISH SERVICE’ at the top right and I clicked it.  It popped up a messaged that said ‘log-in required.’  Okay, I’ll go ahead and make a quick account now that I have my foreign registration.  I click on the link to sign up (which you would have to know the word in Korean) and after agreeing to like 6 different service agreements and signing away my first-born son I got this lovely screen requiring me to have a Korean registration number.  Ef you KT.  FAIL.

Korea tech blogger gives TED talk

I love TED, it’s on my list of favorite things for my iPod.  TED conferences have all sorts of interesting talks which definitely includes fellow blogger Changwon Kim’s talk about technology in Korea.  Here’s the link, go watch it: http://www.web20asia.com/413

Another rant about Korean website navigation

Please, please, for the love of all that is sacred don’t use flash navigation bars which disappear if you move the mouse below the navigation bar … here’s one example:

BAD: http://www.sejongpac.or.kr/english/

GOOD: http://www.useoul.edu/

BAD (same school … ><): http://oia.snu.ac.kr/

It’s so freaking annoying when the secondary menu is long so you have to make sure to keep the mouse exactly inside the navigation area the whole time you navigate to the very, very end.  Seriously, sometimes it feels like that game where you do surgery and if you touch the sides of the walls it buzzes and you lose.

I wouldn’t have made this post if I didn’t see this kind of thing EVERYWHERE.  Seriously, I know flash; it would take like 1 second to fix … At least make the animation longer so the user can realize that they accidentally went too far so they can go back to the menu instead of starting over.  Sure, it’s just an extra second, but it’s the frustration that this kind of navigation bar is very common across many, many Korean websites.

Sorry, since I’ve been in the web programming biz for a while my soul dies a little every time I see web design like this ㅜㅜ

Okay, ONE more rant. This time: Cyworld

One more rant.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Cyworld (싸이월드).  I use it almost as much as Facebook (and have more ‘friends’ on Cyworld too).

BUT.

Why can we only have 4 groups to organize friends?  I have a group for my SNU friends, one group for people I met outside of Korea, and one group for people in Korea.  For me though, that’s WAY not enough.  I really need to be able to organize a lot more.  It’s HARD to remember who people are when I have a billion 일촌’s who I don’t actually know.  They take up 1 group out of the 4 which leaves me with only three groups to work with.  What about when I want to have a group for coworkers?  People from a certain area?  People from my academic department?

Seriously, why limit it to four?  It makes NO sense whatsoever.

/ end rant

Anyone know a good solution which I’m not aware of?
