Korean CAPTCHA!? Now what??

spam_image

For those who don’t know what a CAPTCHA is, it’s the thing where there’s an image with (usually) random letters and/or numbers like you see above where you have to type them out to verify that you are a real person rather than a computer bot.

Well, I was at school using the Macs and decided I wanted to join one of Cyworld‘s clubs (see previous post).  Well, those clubs usually have a form you have to fill out (like ‘how did you find us?’) so I was left thinking ‘how am I going to sign up for this cool club?’  Yeah, I probably could have easily saved the link to the club but I wanted to join it.  Now.

Then a thought came into my head … Korean Wiki Project!  I quickly ran over to http://www.koreanwikiproject.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hangeul_Assistant, typed out what I saw, and copied and pasted it back into the club registration form.  Easy as pie, I joined a Korean photography club from a computer without Hangeul installed!  If y’all ever need to type something in Korean or need to learn how to use Korean, I highly recommend trying Hangeul Assistant.

Hangeul Assistant 0.5 (Added Keyboard)

Just a little note, I have released another version of the Hangeul Assistant over on the Korean Wiki Project. The major feature this time was a virtual keyboard. You can either click the buttons on the screen or just type naturally on your keyboard and it’ll function just like Korean IME (Input Method Editor), except without the need for it to be installed. It’s great if you’re on someone else’s computer who doesn’t have Korean input or if you’re just learning how to type (it shows the English and Korean letters).  Any feedback is greatly appreciated, I’m sure there’s some bugs I haven’t hammered out yet.

One funny thing, my custom keyboard is a lot faster than if you use Korean IME. Maybe the built in Korean IME causes a lot of processing to be done in flash. The method I have chosen to implement this is fairly lightweight, everything has been written from scratch. Try using your regular Korean IME inside the program and then switch back to english and try the keyboard. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Here is the current version (note, this will update automatically to the latest version so it might be above 0.5):

Alliance with the Korean Wiki Project

I have decided to merge my efforts with Chris over at the Korean Wiki Project in order to collaborate and create the best resource online for the Korean language.  He’s done some great stuff and I hope that together we can make it the best Korean resource.  Right now we are in the preparation stage, creating guidelines and organizing where content will go.  If you would like to contribute, head over there, create an account, read the editing guidelines, and start editing!
